NON-PROFIT ADVANTAGES
Nonprofit organizations, strengthen our social fabric, foster
a civil society and help people, day-in and day-out. Their
efforts are driven by their mission, not by the promise of a
profit. They are endless and enduring.
Nonprofit social service organizations, including all of
those you will find in this database, are:
- Governed by volunteer boards of directors who assure that
their agency stays focused on and achieves its purposes and
uses its resources wisely.
- Exempt from state and federal income tax, and may also be
exempt from property, sales and other taxes. As no part of any
fee you might pay to a nonprofit will go towards these taxes,
more of your money will go towards actual service.
- Restricted by law from profiting from their operation. No
executive makes a huge salary. Neither stockholders nor owners
divide up the profits from a good year. All of the assets from
a nonprofit’s operations are permanently dedicated to
charitable purposes.
- Able to receive government, foundation and corporate
grants and individual charitable contributions. A recent study
found that 89% of households give to charity. 55% of adults
volunteer at a nonprofit organization. All of those resources
are devoted to helping the nonprofit achieve its mission.
- Audited every year by an independent certified public
accountant.
- Required to file a Form 990 with the I.R.S. Those reports
are public and may be viewed by visiting http://www.guidestar.org
and searching for a particular nonprofit.
- Motivated by mission, not profit. Driven to excellence,
not economy. Focused on outcomes, not appearances. Seeking
help for a young person is a difficult responsibility. Ask the
tough questions and choose an organization you can trust.
